Inside Cleethorpes
Cleethorpes – the east-coast rival to Blackpool

Cleethorpes, a charming east-coast town, rivals Blackpool with its classic seaside atmosphere and unique attractions, including The Number 1 Pub, a former booking office-turned-micro-museum celebrating the town’s rich history. Sir Edward Watkin, who brought the Manchester, Sheffield & Lincoln Railway to Cleethorpes in 1863, transformed the town with a promenade and a pier, aiming to create a northern holiday destination.
Today, Cleethorpes blends nostalgia with modern appeal. Visitors stroll along a candy-floss-scented promenade, relax in the upscale Kingsway Hotel with its Art Deco charm, and explore Victorian streets lined with independent shops and bars, like the Folk Wine Bar. For a vintage dining experience, Ocean Fish Bar offers traditional fish and chips in a retro lounge setting.
The Cleethorpes Coast Light Railway, established in 1947, still delights riders with views over the beach and boating lake. A classic Sunday lunch at the Kingsway rounds off the experience, adding a taste of tradition.
